Question over Big Caroline

South Western Times - - Sport -

One of the many questions heading into Saturday’s season opener at the Bunbury Turf Club is whether Peter and Matthew Giadresco’s experienced mare Big Caroline can finally break through for victory in the JCW Electrical handicap (1100m).

Having placed four times in her last five starts — including three second placings — the mare is capable of getting the job done, with Mitchell Pateman aboard.

Despite drawing barrier two, the Giadresco stable will be confident her resilience in the closing stages will be enough to secure line honours.

Others to push for victory should include Adam Durrant’s runner How To Fly, who recorded an impressive victory at Belmont Park on September 29 after sprinting clear in the final 200m and Stageman, who will be ridden by William Pike.

Another question is can anyone stop Lindsey Smith’s four-year-old Great Again from making it six consecutive wins?

Having drawn barrier 10, Pateman will be licking his lips at the prospect of claiming the In Memory of Brendan Ballantyne handicap (1400m), with his closing speed notorious for troubling rivals.

Racing gets under way at 1.19pm.
