Flare flags concern

South Western Times - - News -

The Capel Shire Council received information about the improper use of an Incandescent Parachute Flare last week.

The council warned residents the improper use of distress flares can cause unnecessary concern and activation of volunteer emergency services and could potentially start bush fires.

When flares pass their use by date, they can only be disposed of by authorised agencies.

In the Capel region, the nearest contact points are the Department of Transport (9792 6607) or Busselton Volunteer Marine Rescue (9754 7777).

Anyone with information about people improperly using flares has been urged to contact Ranger Services on 9727 0222.

Boat owners were reminded to ensure their flares are correctly and securely stored to avoid being stolen from their vessels.
