The South West was heavily represented at the underwater hockey trans-Tasman tournament in New Zealand between October 7-10, with eight youngsters representing Australia.

Competing across under-19 men’s and women’s level, Australia took bronze in both divisions despite tough competition.

Underwater Hockey Australia junior development officer Clayton “Jumpy” Jendrzejak said the tournament provided an excellent opportunity for the players to gain valuable international experience ahead of next year’s junior age world tournament, which will be held in the UK.

There was an added thrill for Maybelle Barr and Blake Jendrzejak, who were chosen to hoist the Australian flag during the tournament’s opening ceremony.

All eight juniors proudly represent Bunbury, Busselton and Margaret River at club level.

The South West’s contingent of underwater hockey players shone in New Zealand.
