The South West Phoenix fielded three youth teams at the 2019 SingaCup soccer tournament in Singapore earlier this month.

Aside from stifling heat and oppressive humidity, the South West faced talented club sides from all across Australasia.

After finishing second in Group C of the under-14s division, the Phoenix were defeated in the quarterfinals while Kev Homden’s under-16s also finished second in their group and made the semifinals.

Despite losing their third-placed play-off, the Phoenix lads gained plenty from the match.

Phoenix junior co-ordinator Jen Curtis was thrilled with how all players acquitted themselves on and off the pitch.

“They were very well behaved,” she said. “They were very much a credit to their club, themselves and their parents.

“The tournament really gave them an opportunity to see things from a variety of different angles – in terms of tactics and physicality.”

Curtis confirmed the Phoenix would again field three youth teams at the 2019 tournament.

Preparations have also begun for the 2019 season at senior level, with first-team boss Tony Novello putting his men through their first pre-season session on Tuesday.
