Seafood in hot demand

South Western Times - - News -

Seafood has become the South West’s go-to meat this festive season with Australian prawns and fish said to be in hot demand.

Craven Foods managing director Doug Mateljan said there was still demand for the traditional ham and turkey, but more people have opted for seafood this year.

“I think the weather influences a lot of people with seafood nowadays,” he said. “Most people now are looking for Australian prawns which is really good to see.”

While seafood may be the go-to, demand for turkey has remained strong, according to Buckingham Family Meats, though the seafood orders have started to roll in.

“Turkey has been massive this year,” co-owner Blair Parsons said.

“I’ve sold all of the turkeys and I’m battling to get any more in and all the suppliers are in the same boat.

“Seafood orders always come in a little bit later, but there’s lots of prawns on order.

“The prawns are going really well.”
