Note to president: you cannot fool me
I would like to respond to the Capel Shire president’s letter, “Meeting just continued”, (South Western Times, 23/1) and I will start with a quote from the 16th president of the US, Abraham Lincoln: “You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time”.
From my notes at the special council meeting on January 8 at the Capel council chambers, Cr Michael Southwell said the at the conclusion of the meeting: “Thank you for your patience and indulgence. There’s been a motion to adjourn the meeting indefinitely and that has been carried that the meeting has been adjourned, so I now announce the meeting closed.”
Note the word I recorded: “indefinitely”.
Therefore, to say that the meeting from January 8 is just a continuation of the previous week’s meeting gets him off the hook. One week later, the president calls another special meeting, again for the same issue, that being a review of the chief executive’s performance, which was lost 4-5.
Let me remind Cr Southwell that he is the only one calling for a review of the Capel chief executive’s performance, his motions backed by Cr Kieran Noonan.
Because Cr Southwell cannot get his way, like a kid who has been bowled out in a backfollowing yard game of cricket, he takes the bat and ball home, even if it’s not his.
The only person causing any confusion within the Capel Shire Council is Cr Southwell, by calling unwarranted special meetings which cost the council and the ratepayers.
Finally, maybe Cr Southwell would be better off sticking to journalism instead of wanting to be a politician, where there are no awards for excellence. Brian Hastie, Stratham
