Hayward quits city for House

James Hayward has resigned from his position as a Bunbury city councillor after being elected to the Upper House of the WA Parliament as a representative for The Nationals WA.

Mayor Gary Brennan made the official announcement at an ordinary meeting on Tuesday night.

In September, Mr Hayward announced he would run for the South West Upper House seat in this year’s State election.

The move came after South West MLC Colin Holt announced he would not be seeking re-election.

Mr Hayward’s long history with the political party began in the early 2000s when he worked as a television reporter in Karratha.

In 2014, the former journalist became The Nationals WA State president, a role which he held for five years, before becoming deputy president of the Federal National Party.

He joins Legalise Cannabis WA’s Sophia Moermond in claiming the in-doubt seats from the recent election.

Liberal MLC Steve Thomas and Labor veterans Sally Talbot and Alannah MacTiernan also secured their positions in the South West Upper House.
