Saleyard move overdue
In October 2002 a contingent held preliminary talks with former MLC Barry House and the late Kim Chance MLC Minister for Agriculture in relation to moving the Boyanup saleyards to Kemerton, the stumbling block was the cost of $8 million (then).
Now there’s yet another proposal to move to the industrial area of Kemerton where it should have gone 20 years ago.
The on again off again project has seen a succession of ministers ignore the facts opting for a political solution which has yet to come to fruition. The Boyanup yards look like a handyman’s repair job in parts with catwalks too high for buyers to make a professional appraisal, no roof and canteen facilities of third world standard, moved 15m from the original facility when asbestos was discovered.
Despite these attempts, rebuilding at Kemerton is the only realistic option. Livestock marketing is a large contributor to the economic future of the State, unfortunately it’s been dismissed out of hand because it doesn’t concern the latte set, they get their meat from a shelf in a supermarket.
