$1650 fine for undersized marron

A 21-year-old man’s mistake has proved costly after he was fined $1650 for possessing marron during the non-possession period while camping in Harvey with a friend.

Kaw Paw appeared in Bunbury Magistrate’s Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to possessing marron during a nonpossession period.

The court was told Paw was on a camping trip with a friend in Harvey in December last year when he went fishing off the edge of Harvey Dam armed with a torch, a handspear and a bucket.

When Fisheries officers approached Paw, the bucket was found to contain several marron, including 14 that were considered undersized. Lawyer Derek Hunter told the court Paw was simply unaware of the laws surrounding marron fishing.

Paw was issued a $200 fine along with a further $1450 fine for the undersized marron.
