City wants area to be part of Ascot
THE City of Belmont will recommend Landgate rezone a strip of land along Great Eastern Highway, that encompasses Balneun Apartments, Celebrations Liquor and The Cray Restaurant, to be part of Ascot.
The recommendation to approve a change of address for 88 Great Eastern Highway, from Belmont to Ascot, was unanimously adopted in council last week, despite City officers recommending refusal.
Balneun Apartments Council of Owners applied for the boundary change in November 2017 after a misconception the property already was located in Ascot began causing various issues.
Deputy Mayor Robert Rossi said in his view the application to rezone the address met Landgate criteria, especially given the history of Ascot, which was formed in 1991 from portions of Belmont and Redcliffe.
Council of Owners spokesman John Morrison said he was pleased the decision went against the City officers’ recommendation.
“We experience a lot of difficulty in receiving services from taxis, delivery trucks and tradesmen, purely because of the misconception that the area is already part of Ascot,” he said.
“In our view the change of address will not affect residents in surrounding areas and we hope Landgate will too support the City’s decision.”
