Southern Gazette (South Perth) - - NEWS -

A BAND from Victoria Park is marching to the beat of its own drum thanks to a recent grant.

Southern Districts Bands received the Bankwest grant, which has been used by the group’s Swing Shift Big Band that plays every third Sunday of the month at Victoria Park Carlisle Bowling Club.

They will be back in action this Sunday from about 2pm as part of celebrations for the bowls club’s open day, where members and visitors can celebrate the start of the coming summer season.

Band president Jessie Smoor said the grant enabled the Swing Shift Big Band to buy new music and

support a local artist who had written arrangements for the group.

“The new song, which we commissioned, is titled It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Want to Rock and

Roll) and will be part of the band’s regular performance schedule with Jamie from Slim Jim and the Phatts,” she said.
