RENOWNED captain Richard de Crespigny became a hero the day he saved the lives of almost 500 people.

Humbled by the newfound title, Mr de Crespigny will share his story of remaining calm during a horrific experience at the Manning Community Centre tomorrow as he launches his new book FLY!

The tell-all book reveals how the commercial pilot drew on more than 40 years experience and built resilience in a time when a catastrophic explosion rocked the A380 plane he was controlling en route from Sydney for Singapore on November 4, 2010.

Mr de Crespigny and his team remained calm and safely landed the plane two hours after take-off, with all 469 passengers and crew members escaping injury.

He said his book addresses critical elements that build resilience.
