DO YOU know where your Christ­mas presents came from? Was any­one ex­ploited to en­sure you could spoil your fam­ily and friends? Fairtrade is a cer­ti­fi­ca­tion sys­tem that of­fers farm­ers and work­ers in de­vel­op­ing coun­tries a bet­ter deal and im­proved terms of trade. Fairtrade Aus­tralia chief ex­ec­u­tive Molly Har­riss Ol­son said Aus­tralians and New Zealan­ders spent $352 mil­lion on Fairtrade prod­ucts last year. “In the sea­son of giv­ing, we’d love to see those look­ing for­ward to Christ­mas giv­ing twice – to their loved ones un­der the tree, and by en­sur­ing the work­ers and pro­duc­ers of those presents have brighter fu­tures,” she said. More than 1.6 mil­lion peo­ple in 75 coun­tries sup­ply the re­sources and labour for Fairtrade cer­ti­fied prod­ucts. Fairtrade gives them an op­por­tu­nity to im­prove their work­ing and liv­ing con­di­tions, and cre­ates brighter op­por­tu­ni­ties Check out the Fairtrade web­site for gift ideas.
