THE Souths Netball Club is celebrating its 80th year next month, making it one of the oldest netball clubs in WA.

Formally South Belmont Netball Club, it was founded in 1938 by a group of friends who decided to form a team to play at the WA Women’s Basket Ball Association.

The club grew from that initial team and has had an uninterrupted involvement with Netball WA and Perth Netball Association ever since.

Evelyn Robinson (91), a former club president, coach and now life member, joined the club in 1942.

In 1953, Mrs Robinson helped the club win its first A1 division at Matthews Netball Centre. Today, the club has three senior teams.

Stephanie Law (27), a current player and coach, said she would love to see the club continue for another 80 years.

“I started playing netball at a very young age,” she said. “My mum played and coached the Souths, so it seemed natural that I follow suit.

“It is a wonderful club to belong to, not only for the game but for that history.

“We have many mums playing daughters, grand-daughters, sisters and aunts, and it’s that companionship we want to celebrate.”

The club’s 80th reunion event is on June 17, 3-5pm, at Perth Netball Association. Call Annise Law on 0438 858 882.
