Have your say on future of our river

A MAJOR project is underway to solidify what we want from Perth's most famous stretch of the Swan River and its surrounds in the future – and those responsible want to know your thoughts.

Up for consideration is the section of water between the city's Narrows and Windan bridges – an area synonymous with spectacular city views, cruising boats, puttering ferries and Australia Day fireworks.

The Perth Water Precinct Plan is itself only at planning stage but it contains plenty of talking points, including more ferry stops, a separate cycleway across Heirisson Island, proposals for floating barges and more free mooring docks.

Eight government agencies, including the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions and the councils of Perth, South Perth and Victoria Park, are working on a plan to balance greater use and development with measures to ensure sustainability of one of the city’s greatest natural assets.

The department’s rivers and estuaries branch acting manager, Glen McLeodThorpe, said people could use an interactive website to share issues and opportunities that they think should be taken into account.

“They can agree, disagree and comment on the ideas but we want to have a discussion with the Perth community about Perth Water. Most importantly, they can suggest new ideas and have a broader discussion,” he said.

The website www.bit.ly/ perthwater is live and people can have their say throughout August. The Perth Water Vision Group expects to complete a draft precinct plan by the end of the year, ready for public comment early in 2019.
