New station for Kensington police

Southern Gazette (Victoria Park) - - News - Bronwyn Donovan

THE Kensington Detective’s office has moved as part of the recent restructure of metropolitan police districts.

The detectives were in Kensington since July 2010 but last month moved to Cannington police station on Albany Highway, in line with the new Cannington district hub.

Officer-in-charge Tom Tristram said the move ensured a timely response to serious crime as the new accommodation was centrally located within their district, which covered suburbs in the cities of South Perth, Belmont, Cannington and parts of Melville and the Town of Victoria Park.

In April, Police Commissioner Chris Dawson announced a significant operational restructure of the WA Police Force that would include four districts being increased to eight.

The new Cannington district split off from Armadale in what was previously the South East Metropolitan District.

Police Minister Michelle Roberts said doubling the number of districts shortened response times.

“One of the other problems of the old model is it effectively broke the police in half, with half the officers doing local policing and the other half part of response teams,” she said.

“Response times blew out and sometimes people were travelling from one part of the metro area to the other for individual responses.”

Cannington district superintendent Greg Knott said as Armadale had become a policing district in its own right, Cannington staff could focus more on local issues.

“By re-allocating some of the suburbs amongst our police stations we now have a closer fit with local government agencies,” he said.

“Each station is now only dealing with two councils, so they will be able to concentrate more on their particular concerns.”

Cannington district now also has a dedicated Family and Domestic Violence Response team on site.
