Principal sets the tone right
AFTER 29 years in the schoolyard, Kent Street Senior High School principal Katherine Ward has been nominated by her school for WA Secondary School Principal of the Year.
She said she was recognised as a finalist in the WA Education Awards because of the way she embraced the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework and how this was translated into action.
“The number of Aboriginal students at Kent Street has grown exponentially since I’ve been here,” she said. “I think we had 50 or 54 Aboriginal students here in 2012 and we are hitting the 100 mark now.
“I’ve put that down to the local community voting with their feet, actually seeing that Kent Street is making a difference.”
She said her colleagues also nominated her for her mantras, her favourite being “set the tone”.
“It is my job to lead how we should be, and being an outgoing, happy being is actually really important to the tone of the school,” Mrs Ward said.
She said she already felt like a winner.
“I feel like a winner because my people care enough to want to give me this accolade.”
