‘Dog’ in Cattery
FORMER coach Ian ‘Doggy’ Rowland will be a special guest when Finley Football Club past players hold their annual luncheon at the clubrooms on Saturday July 30.
Ian steered the club to a grand final appearance against Berrigan in 1968 and is widely credited with laying the foundations for eventual premiership success achieved in 1971.
Having previously enjoyed an outstanding career with St Kilda in the then-VFL, Ian’s move to join Finley was seen as a major coup for country football at that time.
Playing along-side and mentoring such past club champions as Leo McNamara, Jim Broockman, Keith Brain and David Henderson to name but a few, Ian is well qualified to relate tales of the 1960s era to what is sure to be a captive and appreciative audience.
An impressive array of guest speakers will entertain supporters throughout the luncheon which in recent times has enjoyed exceptional patronage from the wives and partners of former players and associates.
This year also recognises the 20th anniversary of the 1991 reserves flag winning effort.
Coach Warren Ross will no doubt continue to embellish his personal heroics of that day with passing acknowledgement of assistance provided by teammates.
The luncheon will begin at 11.30am at the clubrooms and is open to all past and present supporters of the club.
Bookings are essential before the July 24 by contacting Ash Haynes on 5883 1221 or 0409 831 228 or Mark O’Bryan on 0459 026 451.
