Blighty beats rival Rovers

Southern Riverina news - - Sport -

BLIGHTY held its composure to knock off arch rival Deni Rovers by 13 points in near-perfect conditions at Blighty on Saturday.

Despite the win, the Redeyes couldn’t crack the Picola District Football League top five.

Yarroweyah’s fourpoint thriller over Strathmerton keeps Blighty in sixth spot, separated from the Hoppers by just points percentage.

‘‘We just have to keep winning if we want to play finals,’’ Redeyes coach Stewart Craig said.

‘‘It really was a good game of football on Saturday, from both sides.

‘‘It does mean a lot to the boys to beat the Rovers though. They definitely put a lot of effort into the team song (after the match).’’

Rovers assistant coach Luke Moodie described the match as a ‘‘real arm wrestle’’.

‘‘It was such a close game all day and it could have gone either way,’’ he said.

‘‘Which ever side lost was always going to be disappointed.

‘‘It just came down to them being the better side over four quarters.

‘‘We probably only played three and a half quarters.’’

Final score: Blighty 14.11 (95) defeated Deni Rovers 12.10 (82).
