Swimathon may become annual event
The Finley Amateur Swimming Club held a ‘swimathon’ on Friday evening to help a lady who has done and continues to give so much to her community.
Swimming has always been a close community in Finley. Old and young swimmers have an empathy with each other possibly because it is a unique and very disciplined sport.
No matter what level you swam at, you know the level of commitment needed not simply by the swimmers involved but by all the mums and dads that make it happen.
The sport of swimming has survived because of volunteers.
Thousands of kids have learnt to swim and have survived because of volunteers.
The swimathon was a way of helping and thanking a lady who has given so much not only to her immediate community, but to swimming.
The event was taken on by all with a sense of fun, and challenges were issued and accepted.
It was so good to see everyone so enthusiastic and determined to be positively involved with such a fine cause.
The event gave all involved a sense of community spirit, so much so that the possibility of the club doing a fundraiser swimathon for a cause every year has surfaced.
Briefly back to the lady concerned; she is a perfect example of how the ‘good’ people do brings out more of the same from others.
Forty laps is one kilometre. During a swimathon no stopping is permitted or a restart from the beginning is required.
Here are just a few of the distances swum on Friday night. It was not an ideal swimming night, a bit cool and windy.
Shawna Maxwell 222 laps; Jordy Taylor 200; Merv Percy 201; Harrison Evans 200; Sarah Taylor 150; Chelsea Taylor 110; Abby Taylor 100; Jo Jo Tessier 104; Ben Carey 104; Ashleigh O’leary 100; Will Burton 100; Kayden Sharpe 100.
Some of the participants are still in primary school, and the effort by everyone was fantastic as was the backing from their sponsors.
Great to see so much enthusiasm for a cause for someone who has given so much to their community by the Finley Swimming Club.
Shawna Maxwell, Merv Percy and Harrison Evans swam more than 600 laps between them.
