Cre­at­ing a cow ca­reer

Each year Fin­ley High School par­tic­i­pates in the Cows Cre­ate Ca­reers pro­gram, a Dairy Aus­tralia project that pro­motes ca­reer op­por­tu­ni­ties in the in­dus­try.

This year was no ex­cep­tion with Fin­ley High com­ing 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the awards pre­sen­ta­tion held in Shep­par­ton.

The pro­gram is in­cor­po­rated across the Year 7 Sci­ence and English cur­ricu­lum over five weeks.

This year, six calves were loaned to the school by Peter and Jane Mid­dle­brook for a three week pe­riod.

Stu­dents were in­volved in the daily feed­ing process on a ros­ter ba­sis and got to know the calves.

Murray Dairy In­dus­try Ad­vo­cate Troy Mauger spoke to the stu­dents at school about the pro­gram and how to care for young calves.

Twenty-three ex­cited stu­dents at­tended the pre­sen­ta­tion day at Shep­par­ton and the re­sults speak for them­selves with FHS named the high­est rank­ing school.

3rd place: FHS ‘The Milky Ways’ - Bai­ley Alexan­der, Michael Pin­nuck, Joshua Bar­rett and Devlin Tyrell.

2nd place: FHS ‘The Mumbo Milko Amooze­ments’ - Chelsea Cousin, Natalie Rooke, Ge­or­gia Mc­Grath and Sha­nia Mac­cul­lagh.

1st place: FHS ‘Milk­ing Ma­ni­acs’ - Ta­mara Podesta, Alysha Knight and Samuel Orro.
