False alarm raised

Southern Riverina news - - News -

Mid-murray Zone Rural Fire Service (RFS) firefighters were called to a false alarm about 2am Saturday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched after reports of a fire between Finley and Jerilderie.

Mid-murray Zone Superintendent Gary Eason said they searched the area for about an hour but did not find a fire.

Supt Eason said smoke from an approved burn may have prompted someone to raise the alarm.

He said it was a timely reminder regarding permitted burns.

The RFS said a number of permits have been issued throughout the region, and burning-off smoke will become more common as a result.

Supt Eason said permitted burns are commonly approved for weekdays, after 4pm.

The fires should then be extinguished by midnight.

For information about permits and condition for burning-off, please phone the RFS on (03) 5881 5351.
