More than 50 local green thumbs gathered at the Finley Uniting Church as way of celebration on Monday.

The group gathered for the 50th Anniversary Birthday of the Finley Garden Club.

People came together from all over - Mooroopna, Tatura, Echuca, Numurkah, Pyramid Hill, Tocumwal, Gosford and former members from the local area.

Two guest speakers - Julie Brooksby from Echuca and Ken Bradley from Garden Clubs of Australia - were well received.

Mr Bradley said there are 663 clubs and societies associated with his organisation.

‘‘Today Finley Garden Club is number one as it is their 50 year anniversary,’’ he said.

When he went looking for the records, Mr Bradley said he actually found evidence to suggest the Finley Club was formed in 1950.

This had him thinking ‘they must count differently in Finley’.

But this was not the case and it was soon released that it was in fact 50 years that was to be celebrated.

Mr Bradley presented a certificate to Finley Garden Club to acknowledge the golden anniversary.

Members - both past and present - were thanked for their support and the day was a real honour for all involved.

Joyce Yeo, who joined the club in about 1963, and Ann Maxwell, who has been a member for about 35 years, were on hand to cut the birthday cake.

Long running members Joyce Yeo and Ann Maxwell got the pleasure of cutting the birthday cake.
