Finley in GF
Hay War Memorial High School took out its third Val Meadowcroft Shield on Friday.
It beat reigning champion Finley in a thrilling final at the Hardinge St Oval.
With scores level at the final siren, an extra 10 minutes was played with Hay moving clear by 11 points.
Hay now goes on to contest the Giants U/15 Girls Cup in Canberra in August.
The shield is contested by girls from Years 7, 8 and 9.
It is an AFL NSW/ ACT initiative to recognise quiet achiever Val Meadowcroft who has helped nurture grass roots footy in the district for many years.
Hay won the inaug- ural shield in 2006, Deniliquin won in 2007, Finley in 2008, Barham in 2009, Hay in 2010 and Finley again in 2011.
AFL NSW/ACT representative Andrew Richardson said it’s great to see young ladies taking an interest in sport.
‘‘The spirit displayed on the day was fantastic,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s been a very even comp for six years now. It’s healthy for the sport.’’
Several boys from Deniliquin High umpired the day and Finley coach Trish Jackson said ‘‘they were fantastic.’’
‘‘The boys were very professional,’’ she said.
