Ad­ven­ture from Fin­ley to Nigeria

Next Sunday, July 8, at the Ber­ri­gan Unit­ing Church, Kent and Ruth Hodge will give an over­view of their work in the Chris­tian Faith In­sti­tute in Jos, Nigeria.

There has been con­sid­er­able un­rest in that part of Africa, with Mus­lim and pa­gan mobs at­tack­ing Chris­tians and burn­ing down their churches and houses.

Many will re­mem­ber Ruth Hodge (nee Todd) who lived in Fin­ley in her teen years and at­tended Fin­ley High School.

All are wel­come to at­tend the 11am ser­vice in Wesley Church and stay for lunch af­ter­wards.

●●● Ber­ri­gan Red Cross Shop is hav­ing a $1 sale on chil­dren’s wear.

The Shop is open Tues­day to Fri­day from 10am to 4pm and on Satur­day from 10am to noon. It will fin­ish on July 14.

●●● The Ber­ri­gan district was sad­dened to learn of the pass­ing of Mary Powell last week.

Mary’s fam­ily were at the Ber­ri­gan Newsagents for some 34 years, dur­ing which time Mary worked in the shop with her mother - the late Mrs Mary Powell - for a num­ber of years.

In 1966, Mary moved to Al­bury were she had a po­si­tion with the Mur­ray River County Coun­cil, dur­ing which time she stud­ied ac­coun­tancy at night school and grad­u­ated as a char­tered ac­coun­tant.

She was then em­ployed by the firm later known as KPMG, and be­came recog­nised as very tal­ented in this field.

She re­tired in 1993 and was recog­nised in the Border Mail as one of the pi­o­neer women to be em­ployed in the pro­fes­sional field.

Mary will be laid to rest on Fri­day af­ter a re­quiem mass, at 11am at St. Colum­bas Catholic Church Ber­ri­gan.

Her par­ents Jack and Mary Powell and broth­ers Des and Mau­rice all pre-de­ceased her, and sym­pa­thy is ex­tended to her sis­ter-in-law Tess, her niece Tr­isha and her neph­ews Michael and John. Also to her cousins Bernard and Mary Curtin, and Mar­garet and Ian Roberts of Coota­mundra.

●●● On Satur­day, July 14 there will be an eight­ies party at the Ber­ri­gan Sports­ground clu­b­rooms, af­ter the Ber­ri­gan vs Blighty game.

The night will start at 7.30pm.

Tickets avail­able at the door, for $10 per per­son or $15 if not in cos­tume.

●●● Ber­ri­gan CWA mem­bers will meet for the craft/plan­ning meet­ing at the CWA Rooms at 2pm on Mon­day, July 9.

The ladies will con­tinue to sharpen their cro­chet­ing skills.

Guest Speaker will be An­gela Peris who will share in­for­ma­tion on health and well­ness.

Any­one in­ter­ested in learn­ing to cro­chet or lis­ten­ing to An­gela are wel­come to come along.
