Grow and sell initiative a hit

Southern Riverina news - - NEWS -

The Finley Lake Foreshore came alive Saturday morning with the monthly Finley Farmers Market.

A fantastic variety of goods were on offer and many arrived early to grab the bargains.

With family or friends visiting, locals took the opportunity to take them along to the market where they enjoyed a special breakfast while enjoying the live entertainment.

The Finley Farmers’ Markets showcase a wide selection of locally grown produce, as well as plants, bric-a-brac, and crafts.

The Finley Farmers’ Market committee, in partnership with the Berrigan Shire Youth Development Program and the Finley Menshed formulated an initiative to try to encourage the youth in our community (as well as community groups) to see the possibilities of producing something and then selling it at a local market level.

Several schools in the area were given garden kits at our September market.

The kits included a seedling box, plants and instruction sheets.

Between September and November, they planted the seedlings, looked after them, researched and created instructions for their ‘customers’ and researched recipes that would use the ingredients that were growing in the boxes.

They then came to the November Children and Youth Farmers’ Market last Saturday to sell their boxes.

As an incentive the market also gave away prizes of iTunes vouchers for the best instructions and the best recipes.

The committee members said it is a tribute to the young people involved that they are donating the prizes to the schools.

One of the outcomes of this promotion is that the Finley High School decided to sell compost and mulch as well as the plants.

They had so much interest in this they will probably be back next month to sell some more.

According the Finley Public School teacher Sam Burke, the children were very involved and interested in the whole process and they hope that they will be able to do this again next year.

The next market will be held on December 1.
