Menshed’s helping hand
A donation from Jerilderie Shire Council to Jerilderie Menshed will substantially reduce the organisation’s rate bills for this financial year.
Council made the $750.50 donation after a request from Jerilderie Menshed to have the rates on their shed waived.
Jerilderie Shire Council general manager Craig Moffitt said council is unable to waive any rates, but still wanted to assist the relatively new organisation.
In it’s first year, last year, Mr Moffitt said councillors agreed to donate money to the Jerilderie Menshed which was equivalent to full rates.
This year, the donation represents have the rate price.
Mr Moffitt said council was not in a position to keep fully supporting the Menshed, but would continue to assist where possible.
‘‘The Menshed now has some income, but we wanted to keep up a little bit of support,’’ he said.
‘‘Council has responded to the Menshed’s request for assistance on rates payment for the last two years.
‘‘If they make such a request next year, I expect the council will consider any such request on its merits.
‘‘It is not common for council to waive rates, any request is considered on its merits and the ability of the organisation to meet the charges as well as the level of contribution by the organisation to the community.’’
