Cod catch worth $1mil.
It’s a prize catch for any angler, but catching a specially tagged cod at the Mulwala Cod Classic next month could also potentially win you $1 million.
Believed to be one of the largest promotions attached to a fishing competition yet, the $1 million catch competition was recently launched by Aussie cricketing legend and avid fisherman Merv Hughes.
All anglers who take part in the Classic — to be held Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 6 — will have a chance of claiming the prize.
Anglers are expected to descend on the twin towns of Yarrawonga and Mulwala in their droves in search of ‘Phil’ the specially tagged Cod.
The lucky angler who can to catch Phil will instantly win an Isuzu D-Max ute.
They then get a one-in-100 chance of choosing a correct envelope off a board that contains the million dollar cheque.
‘‘I’ve been fishing this comp for 13 years now and love it,’’ Mr Hughes said.
‘‘It’s become massive in that time and I wouldn’t miss it for quids.
‘‘I actually caught my first ever legal sized cod there last year and hopefully I can find Phil this year; bring it on.’’
Cod Classic event director Tony Bennett said the massive prize has undoubtedly increased interest in this year’s event.
‘‘Never before has there been such excitement in the lead up to a Cod Classic,’’ he said.
‘‘With the amazing prize of a potential one million dollars on offer for anybody who can catch Phil, fishos are getting pretty excited.
‘‘Throw in a prize pool that totals in excess of $150,000, including an Isuzu D-Max ute and seven boating packages, you would be crazy to miss it.’’
In its 16th year, the Cod Classic celebrates the opening to cod season with a broad range of festivities.
Designed for the family with all levels of fishing skills catered for, everybody has a chance of winning one of the many great prizes on offer whether fishing from boat or bank, using either bait or lures.
The majority of prizes are randomly drawn, which means you don’t have to catch a fish to be a winner.
And those lucky enough to land a legal size Murray Cod or Golden Perch go into additional prize draws.
There are more than 1500 prizes for adults, and all juniors will receive several prizes.
