Alternative plan for Memorial Hall
Dear Editor, Whilst the recommendation from the Berrigan Shire Council to demolish the Finley War Memorial Hall is no longer on the table, and goes some way to full retention of the FWMH, we are deeply concerned that the proposed plan option three will not meet with the regulations that govern the School of Arts and FWMH.
Firstly the idea of removing the annex and all toilets to be replaced by a small set of three toilets in front of the only external fire escape egress we feel sure will be in breach of fire and safety regulations, together with blocking off the service door to the kitchen.
Our enquiries to date have shown this to be the case yet there are a number of other issues that would need to be dealt with. Two committees under the regulations are not permissible nor are any two events being held simultaneously in both halls.
The FWMH is a dedicated and registered War Memorial, as such grants are available to carry out repairs to the Hall but not for demolition purposes.
The removal of the toilets and annex will render the hall to be in a non-functioning state with a further risk of a rapid downgrade. No public facility can be without sanitary facilities, nor can any fire escape be impeded.
We are now looking at two options — do nothing or adopt our option whereby the annex is reconstructed using a steel fabrication adding suitable cladding, new toilets and storerooms at the rear of the halls, together with several unisex toilets to be built in the area behind the kitchen which coincidentally happens to be the same size as the ladies toilets in existence, which should remain and be further upgraded.
Whilst we welcome the advances made by the Council in deciding not to demolish the FWMH, we feel there is still a long way to go before an amicable resolution can be reached. We would also welcome a modernisation of the kitchen in time.
Yours etc, Patricia Boyd Save the Finley War Memorial Hall Association secretary
