Wild weather causes black-outs

Storm ac­tiv­ity in the lo­cal area last Tues­day kept Essential En­ergy crews busy as they dealt with a num­ber of faults in the elec­tric­ity net­work caused by the wild weather.

Up to 1,300 Essential En­ergy cus­tomers in the Ber­ri­gan area were with­out power from 5.55pm when net­work pro­tec­tion equip­ment was op­er­ated to iso­late sup­ply to the area and en­sure the safety of the elec­tric­ity net­work and the com­mu­nity.

Crews re­sponded to re­ports of fallen pow­er­lines in Co­bram St, Ber­ri­gan and on ar­rival iden­ti­fied a tele­vi­sion aerial ca­ble had come into con­tact with a ser­vice wire.

Field staff safely re­moved the ca­ble and sup­ply was re­stored to all cus­tomers by around 7pm.

In the Finley and Tocumwal area, about 1,750 cus­tomers were with­out power from about 8.20pm while crews car­ried out re­pairs to a dam­aged power pole in Finley. Sup­ply was re­stored to all cus­tomers by 11.30pm.

Essential En­ergy crews also re­sponded to a small num­ber of iso­lated in­ci­dents in the area dur­ing the af­ter­noon and evening.

Essential En­ergy re­minds res­i­dents to re­port fallen pow­er­lines, net­work dam­age, fires or trees con­tact­ing pow­er­lines to call them on 13 20 80 or call 000 if the sit­u­a­tion is life threat­en­ing.
