Rice innovation workshop
New innovations in rice farming will be showcased at a free workshop in Finley and Jerilderie today.
The Rice Extension Innovator’s Workshop is being coordinated by the Rice Industry Extension team, with support from Murray Local Land Services and Australian National Landcare.
Rice Industry Extension coordinator Gae Plunkett said one of the most exciting presentations on the day will be from a team of Melbourne University students. The students are developing a microwave system to kill weeds, which would limit the use of pesticides onfarm.
Other topics to be covered include layout designs, benchmarking in your farming business, drones and short season rice varieties and there will be presentations from Nuffield scholar Drew Braithwaite and Rachel Kelly from Ricegrowers Association of Australia
A full-day workshop it starts at the rice demonstration sites at Finley before moving on to Rice Research Australia Pty Ltd’s ‘Old Coree’ property near Jerilderie. Lunch and other refreshments will be provided as part of the workshop.
