Rice in­no­va­tion work­shop

New in­no­va­tions in rice farming will be show­cased at a free work­shop in Fin­ley and Jer­ilderie today.

The Rice Ex­ten­sion In­no­va­tor’s Work­shop is be­ing co­or­di­nated by the Rice In­dus­try Ex­ten­sion team, with sup­port from Mur­ray Lo­cal Land Ser­vices and Aus­tralian Na­tional Land­care.

Rice In­dus­try Ex­ten­sion co­or­di­na­tor Gae Plun­kett said one of the most ex­cit­ing pre­sen­ta­tions on the day will be from a team of Mel­bourne Uni­ver­sity stu­dents. The stu­dents are de­vel­op­ing a mi­crowave sys­tem to kill weeds, which would limit the use of pes­ti­cides on­farm.

Other top­ics to be cov­ered in­clude lay­out de­signs, bench­mark­ing in your farming busi­ness, drones and short sea­son rice va­ri­eties and there will be pre­sen­ta­tions from Nuffield scholar Drew Braith­waite and Rachel Kelly from Rice­grow­ers As­so­ci­a­tion of Aus­tralia

A full-day work­shop it starts at the rice demon­stra­tion sites at Fin­ley be­fore mov­ing on to Rice Re­search Aus­tralia Pty Ltd’s ‘Old Coree’ prop­erty near Jer­ilderie. Lunch and other re­fresh­ments will be pro­vided as part of the work­shop.
