Volunteers needed to run club
Volunteers are needed to ensure the Berrigan Community Golf & Bowls Club remains open in the New Year.
The future of the club, which has decided to operate as a community club, was in limbo following a decision made in August by Barooga Sporties to withdraw from running it.
Members of the Berrigan Advisory Group, which has operated under the Sporties banner to help run the club, met with Barooga Sporties representatives last Wednesday.
It was decided that after January 28, the general clubhouse, golf course and bowling greens will need to be run solely by volunteers.
The club will continue under the guidance of the Barooga Sports Club until such time as the liquor licence and other legalities of the de-amalgamation are finalised.
An Advisory Group spokesperson said they are seeking a range of volunteers but that a total number of how many are required is still unclear.
‘‘We’ll need people with their Responsible Serving of Alcohol and Responsible Conduct of Gambling competency cards to do training with Barooga Sports Club staff in the Berrigan Club,’’ the spokesperson said.
‘‘We also need cleaners, people to look after greens and many more. We won’t survive if we don’t get assistance, it’s as simple as that.
‘‘People have indicated they will help but now it’s crunch time.
‘‘Nearby clubs like Finley and Jerilderie golf clubs are run by the community and we are confident we will be able to, it’s just a matter of people coming forward.’’
Meanwhile, the club’s social members are encouraged to continue their membership with the Sporties as it will be recognised with the Berrigan Club.
It was an eight year experiment to have the Berrigan facility operate under Sporties control.
The Sporties decision follows its Group loss of $1.6 million last year and a subsequent decision not to support unprofitable businesses.
When the Berrigan Golf Club fell on hard times in the early 2000s, the Barooga Sporties Group bought the property, saying at the time it had done so to ensure it was able to stay open. It then completed major internal refurbishments.
Berrigan Golf and Bowls Club amalgamated with the Barooga Sporties Group in 2008.
