Stars discuss their careers
Stars of music, comedy, football and business were on hand to inspire Berrigan Shire’s future leaders at a special forum last week.
Finley High School Year 11 and 12 students participated in the Youth Futures Career Expo, hosted by Berrigan Shire Council, last Wednesday.
Close to 100 students participated in the event held at the Finley Recreation Reserve, which included a visit from several North Melbourne footballers.
Council economic and industry development liaison Merran Socha said the expo aims to highlight the opportunities available in rural and regional areas and focuses on specific jobs within different industries.
She said the celebrity guest speakers captured the attention of the students.
‘‘The day got off to a great start with wellknown singer, songwriter and comedian and five-time Golden Guitar winner Peter Denahy playing a bit of music and talking about his life as a self-employed musician,’’ Ms Socha said.
‘‘Peter had the students asking for more and he was thoroughly engaged when someone asked during question time if he could rap.
‘‘Members of the North Melbourne Football Club joined a discussion on professional sport and careers after sport. Other contributors to the panel were Jamie Haynes from Trigger Performance and Martin Gleeson from AFL Goulburn Murray.
‘‘Some of the students assisted the AFL players to run a super clinic for the local primary schools as well.’’
Ms Socha said localised employment opportunities were also thoroughly outlined as part of the day.
‘‘There was a panel discussion session looking at different opportunities in tourism and hospitality including operating an attraction, managing a resort, running a visitor centre or major event, and working in the club environment.
‘‘Following the event theme, the students were asked to think of a big event involving food and they had to set and decorate a special event table.
‘‘A discussion panel looking at the diversity of agriculture careers rounded out a very successful day.’’
Ms Socha said council would like to thank the many local business owners and professional who gave up their time to be part of the day and share their career experiences with the students.
