High School given $2000 helping hand

Southern Riverina news - - NEWS - Anne Freestone

Finley High School principal Helen McRae was delighted to receive a generous donation of $2000 from the Finley Community Second Hand Shop recently.

This contribution will be used for student excursions, including the annual Year 7 excursion.

Many of the school programs are supported by local organisations and this makes a huge difference to costs for families.

Tickets for OOSH and Biralee Preschool’s major fundraiser, Dancing With The Stars, will go on sale at Murray Hut Clothing from 9am, on Tuesday, July 11.

To be held on August 12, tickets for the event are $65 per person, which includes champagne on arrival, a meal and entertainment.

It’s recommended bookings be made as soon as possible, as this is always a very popular event.

Members of the community are also encouraged to take part in the viewer’s choice award by calling into the Finley Newsagency — $1 equals one viewer vote.

More information on the participating dancers — Michael Littlejohn and Di Gray, Marcia Pyle and Greg Lawlor, Emma Hurlston and Paul Bramley, and Ally Rourke and Matt Clarke — will be included in upcoming editions of From Finley.

Family and friends gathered with Betty Walsh to help celebrate a very special occasion, her 90th birthday.

Her son Michael from Finley organised the event with the assistance of her daughters, Margaret, Lorraine and Dianne.

Betty’s daughters travelled from Mandra, Kalgoorlie and Albury respectively to attend the event.

Also in attendance were Betty’s brothers, Lou, Des and Ray.

It is understood Michael’s very large and comfortable shed was beautifully decorated for the occasion.

Best wishes for many more happy birthdays, Betty.

The frosty start to the day didn’t deter many locals and visitors from attending the Finley Farmers’ Market, held at the Railway Park on Saturday morning.

There was plenty to keep everyone of all ages occupied and some very innovative youngsters organised hopscotch to keep warm.

Andrew Hoskin and his daughter Gabrielle were keen to show Andrew’s mother Helen what the district has to offer.

Helen was visiting from Barellan and was most impressed.

Many local residents may not be aware of the large array of interesting articles from times gone by which are on display at the Finley Historical Museum and Log Cabin.

Volunteers freely give time to provide information and explain the uses of these items.

Ken Bevan and Henry Matheson were available to welcome visitors to the museum last weekend and would like to encourage members of the community to visit and inspect the collection.

The local community is in urgent need of clean blankets or doonas.

These can be left at the second hand shop, at the Catholic Presbytery or inside the church.

Any assistance in this regard would be most appreciated.

Members of the Finley RSL Women’s Auxiliary are reminded the next meeting will be held at the RS Club on Tuesday, July 11 from 10.30am. New members are always welcome to attend.

Volunteers were once again braving the cold at the start of the school holidays to conduct Driver Reviver stations and provide coffee and tea breaks for travellers.

Finley can be very proud of the time and effort these residents give to promote the facilities our community can provide, while helping to reduce the alarming road accident statistics.

Peter Rourke was the lucky winner of last Saturday’s Finley Lions Club wood raffle.
