Book to showcase show’s 100th
A book recalling the past 99 Finley Shows will be launched this year, when the Finley Show Society celebrates the town’s 100th show on September 3.
Set to feature a collection of photographs, newspaper clippings and anecdotes, Finley Show Society secretary Carol Kennedy says the book will provide insight into the popular event’s long history.
‘‘We want to share the history of the Finley Show with the area, because it’s an important part of our community,’’ Mrs Kennedy said.
‘‘So far, we’ve collected a few images of showgirls and stock, but we are after more content.
‘‘Anyone with photos or stories is encouraged to share them,’’ she said.
Mrs Kennedy says the show was first held in 1913.
‘‘In our 100 years, only four shows have been missed — in 1931 because of the drought, and from 1940 to 1943 due to World War Two,’’ Mrs Kennedy said.
But today, the Show Society is in good shape with a strong committee and a lot of volunteers.
‘‘The effort and time they put in is fantastic,’’ Mrs Kennedy said.
A dinner will be held on Friday, August 25 to celebrate the anniversary and to intro- duce the entrants.
Meanwhile, Show Society volunteers could be seen in action at a street stall last Wednesday.
Congratulations to Bev Nation on winning the load of firewood, for which Show Society president Keith Kennedy thanks everyone for their support.
The next street stall will be on August 2.
