Famous caller to feature at Autumn Cup

Southern Riverina news - - NEWS -

One of horse racing’s most famous callers, Daniel Mielicki, will feature at the Finley Autumn Cup this year.

Mr Mielicki, a former Melbourne and Caulfield Cup caller, will be the voice of the event’s ‘sixth race’ on Saturday, March 17 — ‘The Greatest Race Never Run’.

It will feature past local connections including owners, jockeys, trainers and horses, and Mr Mielicki said it would allow him to re-live some of his favourite memories of calling at Berrigan — which he started at the age of eight.

He debuted as a caller in February 1978 as an eight year-old, which lea to a guest caller job at Berrigan a month later.

A regular calling job followed at Berrigan for a number of years.

‘‘The hype of that (debut call in 1978) caught the attention of Berrigan & District Race Club president Howard Martin who invited me to stay with him and be a guest caller of two races,’’ Mr Mielicki said.

‘‘The club was informed the regular caller had been involved in a car accident and couldn’t make it, and all of sudden I was to call the entire program. ‘‘I remember it was a 40 degree day. ‘‘A few years later I became the club’s regular caller, until early 1987 when I gained a job as a sports journalist/race caller with Channel 10.

‘‘I called many meetings at Berrigan and got to know plenty of people, and particularly the trainers in the area.

‘‘I called Campaign King’s trial before winning on debut at Berrigan, and he went on to break the Australian record at 800m.’’

Mr Mielicki said he owes a lot of his career highlights to the opportunity provided to him by the Berrigan & District Race Club, and he was excited to call ‘The Greatest Race Never Run’ for the Finley Autumn Cup crowd.

‘‘My call begins at the mounting yard, goes through the exciting race and finishes in the winner’s circle,’’ he said.

‘‘My race call will take place after the last race.’’

Punters will be able to get involved in the ‘sixth race’, by purchasing a sweep ticket.

All Finley Autumn Cup VIP Marquee tickets holders will receive automatic entry into the sweep, as will Berrigan & District Race Club members who can present their membership card at the gate.

For the general public, $10 sweep tickets will also be available for purchase at the gate.

The Finley Autumn Cup is a five-card race day, which features the Country Club Hotel Finley Autumn Cup Handicap.

Gates to the Berrigan Racecourse will open from 11am on race day, and there will be children’s entertainment and live music from Fake News band members Nathan and Justin.

Full TAB and bookmaker facilities will be available on site, and there will also be catering and a bar.

Any race day would not be complete without a Fashions on the Field competition.

Buses running from Finley to Berrigan will leave Finley’s Country Club Hotel at noon and will return after the ‘Greatest Race Never Run’ call.
