Simi speaks strongly to earn Youth of the Year
Finley High School student Simi Naicori was announced as the Finley Lions Club Youth of the Year last week.
Simi was presented with the honour at the club’s annual Youth of the Year competition held at Finley Bowling Club.
Sixty people attended the dinner, where Simi competed against fellow Finley High School student Kiarni Jones in a public speaking competition.
The pair answered two two-minute impromptu questions before presenting their own five minute speech.
Kiarni spoke about her own mental health issues while Simi spoke about Alexander the Great.
The impromptu questions were ‘Where do you see yourself in five years time?’ and ‘How can we improve the facilities in Finley for the younger members of the community?’
Judges Liz McNamara, Michelle Barnes and Syd Dudley selected Kiarni the winner of the public speaking sector while announcing Simi as the overall winner.
Mr Dudley said the two students showed impressive presentation skills.
‘‘Kiarni gave an excellent presentation on mental health,’’ he said.
‘‘Touching on her own experience she made that the template for her presentation.
‘‘Simi is a student representative and school captain.
‘‘He’s 17 years of age and gets out of bed at 3am to work at the bakery and then goes to school afterwards. He’s a real goer.
‘‘That sort of commitment to his life goals is outstanding and probably helped get him over the line.’’
Simi will now compete at the zone final against representatives from Berrigan and Jerilderie, at the Berrigan CWA rooms on March 11.
