Time for a change for Tyre Service owner
Saturday marked the end of an era for Finley Tyre Service with long time owner Barry Dawe retiring from the business.
Mr Dawe, 72, started working at the tyre service 35 years ago, however he recently decided his ‘‘time was up’’.
‘‘It’s just time to go and give somebody else a chance to take over,’’ he said.
‘‘It wasn’t an easy choice but I’ve been thinking about it for a while; it’s never an easy decision.
‘‘What I’ve enjoyed most is the people I’ve had to deal with. They become like your family and it’s nice to see the same people come back again.
‘‘You feel like they’re coming back because they’ve been given something special or because it’s good service.’’
Finley Tyre Service was originally owned by Pat Barrett and located in Murray St in the building now occupied by Southern Riverina Livestock & Property.
Mr Barrett also owned tyre service businesses in Cobram and Berrigan.
Mr Dawe worked at the Finley business for seven years under Mr Barrett before buying it from him and then eventually moving it to Pinnuck St where it is today.
‘‘We’ve had the banner on the second last page of the SRN for basically 35 years,’’ Mr Dawe said.
‘‘Over the past 35 years technology and materials have improved, making tyres more durable.’’
Mr Dawe said these changes have been ‘‘unbelievable’’.
‘‘For a start, the size of tyres has changed from about two sizes when I started at about 13 to 14 inch to these days they’ve gone to 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22 and even 24 inches.
‘‘The size of a tractor tyre has changed dramatically. Tractor tyres crossply or bias ply tyres and then with the invention of radial tyres they all were turned into radials.
‘‘All tractor tyres are pretty much tubeless and they’re bigger, last longer and have a bigger rolling radius.
‘‘Probably the biggest change with all tyres is how much longer they last.’’
Mr Dawe said he will now be able to spend more time working with the Finley Com- munity Help Group and Second Hand Store, Finley Football and Netball Club, Finley Pool Committee and the Finley Apex Sports and Community Centre Committee.
The business will now be taken over by neighbouring car mechanic business Boomerang Motors.
Mr Dawe said he would like to wish new owner Paul Ciccolini and the team the best of luck in the future.
