Tocumwal, Albury pilot program off the radar

Southern Riverina news - - NEWS -

Berrigan Shire has missed out on its joint bid with Albury City Council to host a Qantas pilot training program.

As part of the proposal, Tocumwal Aerodrome would host small aeroplane training before the aspiring pilots graduated to larger aircraft training in Albury.

According to Berrigan Shire general manager Rowan Perkins, the joint bid was denied due to technology issues with Albury.

‘‘I believe the primary issue was with Albury not having landing assistance technology for when big planes fly in as they need to lock into the radar which helps land the plane.

‘‘The shortlisted places that were chosen had that, and I believe there was also a $10 million difference in cost.

‘‘I’m not sure if Albury needed $10 million to host (the pilot program) or if it would cost Qantas an extra $10 million because Albury didn’t have the proper radar systems.

‘‘There was no comment on whether Tocumwal was suitable to host small plane training pilots, they only ruled us out with Albury.

‘‘We’re disappointed Tocumwal wasn’t considered but it was worth a shot.’’

Mr Perkins said shortlisted regional cities still in the hunt to land the program included Wagga, Dubbo and Alice Springs.
