Local horses nominated for Cup race
A total of 70 horses have been nominated for Berrigan Cup day to fill the six races.
Berrigan and Jerilderie trainers will both be prominent across the day including Paul McVicar (Berrigan) and Phil Sweeney (Jerilderie).
In the $15,000 main race, McVicar has nominated two horses Quick Spin and Hakerak.
Quick Spin has reasonable form considering the four year-old gelding has been racing in stronger class, including a fifth placing in Albury on Saturday.
Quick Spin has also been nominated for race four, so he will be expected to run in that race if not accepted for the Gold Cup.
Hakerak is new to the McVicar stables and has struggled to put in a strong run, with his most recent start finishing sixth at Albury on the weekend.
McVicar has one other horse nominated for the day Enconti, who ran a solid third in his first up start in Deniliquin a fortnight ago.
Phil Sweeney’s only Gold Cup nominated horse Our Project has a good chance of taking home the main prize.
Since the six year-old gelding unseated his rider in Griffith in early September, he has put in some excellent runs including a narrow second in the Deniliquin Cup.
He also won a barrier trial and came third in the Jerilderie Gold Cup.
Also racing in the main race will be Leeton trained Zarreig, who won this race in 2016 and recently won the Jerilderie Gold Cup.
Sweeney will be keen to get a win in the first race with two horses nominated Dream Project and Bianbarnie.
Both have put in decent form leading up and will be looking for a good run in the maiden race against weaker horses.
Fellow Jerilderie trainer Ross Purcell has three horses nominated for the big day in races two, three and four.
Jerilderie trained Our Project has been nominated for the Berrigan Cup race.
