Saleyard upgrades proposal

- By James Bennett

Plans to upgrade the Finley Saleyards are being explored by the Berrigan Shire Council and saleyard operator Scanclear.

Although in the early stages of planning, potential upgrades include new sheep and cattle ramps and improved lighting.

According to Berrigan Shire director of corporate services Matt Hansen, the proposed sheep and cattle ramps will be safer and have easier access for transport operators.

‘‘New improvements to the sheep and cattle ramps will allow large trucks such as B doubles better access to the saleyards off Hamilton Street,’’ Mr Hansen said.

‘‘We’ve seen over the past three years larger numbers going through the saleyards, and we want to continue to cater for larger numbers of sheep and cattle.

‘‘It’s too hard to say if those numbers will be maintained (because of the drought conditions) but we’re preparing for the long term future.

‘‘Berrigan Shire Council is committed to the future of the saleyards and from the technical advice this could have a lasting impact of more than 20 years.

‘‘The Finley Saleyards are an integral part of the Finley economy and community.’’

If any upgrades go ahead, they will be the first major renovations to the saleyards since 1999.
