Heritage train to chug into Tocumwal

- Anne Jones

The Seymour Heritage Train group is bringing another vintage train to Tocumwal.

It will be arriving Saturday December 15.

After alighting at the Tocumwal station, passengers and volunteer crew will be bussed around the district for rides on the water.

Some are going to Yarrawonga for a sail on Lake Mulwala and some are going for a ride on Cobber at Cobram.

We hope they enjoy their brief visit to Tocumwal and one day come back and have a longer stay and see what we have to offer. late morning on

The fabulous Foreshore Market returns to Tocumwal this Saturday.

It will definitely be on the Foreshore and will fit in around the construction site.

Don’t let that deter you visiting, as it will be a good chance to see for yourself the progress that has been made on the Splash Park and the determination of the Foreshore Committee to run another successful jam packed market for your enjoyment.

Berrigan Shire has sent out an alert about an internet chat program for those caring for someone with dementia.

This six week internet link up with other carers and a facilitator is being run by Dr Annie Banbury of the Central Queensland University’s Caring for Carers program and is to help break down the isolation so many carers feel.

During the program you will connect with other carers in a similar situation, chat from home in a relaxed, informal situation and learn and share information and experiences with others who understand.

For those who join there is a $50 voucher to cover internet costs and those who complete the program go into a draw for one of five tablets.

To register and for more information ring Karen Nixon on 0437 579 695 or email carers@cqu.edu.au.

As we move in to the final month of the year, your correspondent is already preparing herself for an amazing year ahead.

December is one of the favourite months and not just because it brings with it Christmas, summer holidays, family gettogethers and lots of good cheer.

You may see December as the door to the old year almost being closed – but not quite.

If you look closely through the gap in the door you can catch a glimpse of the shiny New Year ahead filled with infinite possibilities.

December is a month for reflection that brings with it the opportunity to look back on the year that was, and sit with it for a moment and just recollect.

Breathing out and letting go of all the disappointments and the things that didn’t quite work.

But also breathing in all the successes and the beautiful moments.

One of the big successes for Tocumwal was the banning of plastic bags by our supermarket.

Congratulations to all those who had the foresight to know that plastic single use bags have no place in our lives or in our environment.

Out of that action came another success for the locals and that was the group, thanks especially to leader Christine Philpot, making up Boomerang Bags.

They make bags from recycled fabrics, saving these materials from landfill and turning them into reusable shopping bags which they unbelievably give away to those people who would rather a fabric bags than another plastic tote.

Another success for Tocumwal was the emergence of an art group run by Sue Machin.

Meeting on Wednesdays in the Tocumwal War Memorial Hall, this group is taking the local art scene by storm.

They have had one Pop-Up art show and a painting workshop called “From Paddock to Painting” with more scheduled in the new year.

Anyone interested can pop into the Tocumwal War Memorial Hall most Wednesday mornings and make contact with Sue.

Our town signs have to be the most relevant and interesting in the shire.

Especially the one on the northern end of town, the other gets a bit lost in the roundabout and is a bit scattered but they are still a success on the whole.

Biggest item on the success list has to be the start of construction of the Splash Park.

Day by day the structure continues to rise from its foundations and is starting to resemble an old fashioned aeroplane lowflying on the Foreshore.

This week the big water bucket was erected and soon it will be cooling down excited kids in the hot summer holidays.
