Laurie claims Goulburn Murray win

Southern Riverina news - - LOCALCLASSIES -

Berrigan The highlight of the week was Laurie ‘Skinny’ Way winning the Central Goulburn Murray Men’s Novice Singles event at Shepparton East Bowls Club on Sunday.

Way defeated Richard Hanson 21 to 10 to take the title, showing extraordinary composure in the blustery conditions.

It was Way’s consistent draw bowling that took him to the title as he picked up the length early to apply pressure to his Shepparton East opponent.

By the 10th end, Way’s pressure finally told and he picked up a ‘four’, followed by a ‘three’ on the next end to skip out to a matchwinning lead.

Way withstood a late fightback to hold his nerve to win.

From here Way will compete for the State Novice Singles title likely to be held at Mulgrave Country Club in early February.

After the previous week’s thrashing at the hands of Cobram, the Saturday Division Two team made a return to the winner’s list with an upset victory over second-placed Finley at Finley 94 to 84 (14-4).

Graeme Clements and his rink of Neville Burke, Roy Edwards and Davey Fox led the way with a 25 to 15 win with Paul Glanvill holding on for a 26 to 24 win.

For the other two rinks, it was a case of close but not close enough – both losing by a solitary shot.

Rick Bradbury lost 22 to 21 and Barry Hutchinson was pipped 23 to 22.

The win sees Berrigan retain fifth spot on the ladder at the halfway stage with plenty to look forward to in the second half of the season.

This week they take on third-placed Barooga Sports on the carpet at Barooga.

The Division Four team also played Finley at Finley and while they fought hard, their inexperience showed at times as they went down with a final margin of 59 to 39 (14-0).

Bill Daly had a tough day at the office going down 32 to 15 while David Reynoldson and his rink of David Woodward, Joe Cottam and David O’Dwyer were unable to hold off a fast-finishing Finley after leading all day – losing on the very last end 27 to 24.

Division Four will also travel to Barooga this week with a breakthrough win getting closer every week.

A slow start for the Friday Division Two team left them too big a job late in the game – going down to Numurkah Golf 75 to 63 (16-0).

Nan Dart lost narrowly 24 to 22 and Glenys McKay was equally close to a win, defeated 27 to 25. Elaine Hawkins battled hard, losing 24 to 16.

Again, the Friday team were competitive and while they sit seventh on the ladder at the moment they can be confident they can give any team in the competition a real shake.

The Friday team returns to Numurkah this week to take on Numurkah Town.

After the weatherimposed hiatus, twilight bowls returned to Berrigan on Thursday night.

It was the team of Jo Sone, Simone Toll and Paul Harper that took home a $10 club voucher each as the winning team.

There are two weeks to go in this season’s twilight bowls with all welcome to play.

Finley BC Round seven of the Murray Bowls Division saw Finley suffer a defeat to Numurkah by four shots, 75 to 71 (12-4) on Friday.

Nan’s team had a great 38 to 18 victory to keep the margin close, but it wasn’t enough for the overall win.

Round eight will see Finley hosting Cobram on Friday.

Teams are as follows: N Smith (s), A Haines, G Welsh, S.Montgomery; B Robinson (s), H Tabe, L McKellar, S Walsh; T Miles (s), B Anderson, M Koschel, B Boyd. Roll-up at 9.15am.

In Div. Four, Finley defeated Berrigan comfortably, with 59 shots to 39 (14-0),

Round eight is at Tocumwal, for both Div. Two and Div. Four. Cars will leave at 12.15pm.

Div Two teams: A Haines (s), H Tabe, L McKellar, A Cowan; S Johnson (s), N Smith, B Anderson, B Robinson; B Mison (s), G Trevorrow, N Wilson, H Robinson; D McKellar (s), G Close, T Miles, R Koschel.

Div. Four teams: G Pyle (s), L Walsh, M Milthorpe, N Cole; B Wike (s), N Barnes, S Walsh, B Poore.

The Northern Triples maintains a good level of competition. The average attendance is good with 14 teams at Berrigan last week.

It is expected this level will be maintained for the year.

Winner at Berrigan was Alan Hardcastle's Deni RSL team, with evergreen Roy Edwards being runner-up.

The next round will be at Finley on Tuesday.

Phone entries to delegate Des Koschel or Ray Wood.

In the club championships Gail Welsh defeated Sonia Montgomery; Bob Poore defeated Ray Koschel and current champ Geoff Trevorrow defeated Steve Johnson.

Finley RS A group of Finley RS bowlers travelled to Shepparton East Bowls Club last Sunday to watch Kerry Turner play off in the grand final of the Central Goulburn Murray region Women’s Novice.

Playing on carpet in windy conditions, Kerry got off to a slow start before hitting her straps and taking a 13 to 11 lead after 12 ends.

Jan McClure (Shepparton Golf) staged a comeback with the lead changing hands before both ladies tied on the 25th end, 20-all.

A good bowl from Kerry’s opponent took the shot and with Kerry’s last bowl touching the jack, was very unlucky to see it just roll to her opponent’s bowl giving Jan the 21 to 20 victory on the 26th end.

Both ladies played some excellent bowls in trying conditions and should be congratulated for a high standard game of bowls.

Well done Kerry for reaching the final in only your fourth month of playing the game.

Members are coming to the pointy end of the A grade singles club competition with Peter Wilson defeating Gary Beer in a close game last Friday.

Other games will be completed over the next couple of weeks.

Karen Peacock and Iris Reynolds played their semi final yesterday with the winner progressing to the final against Di Retallick which will be played next week.

Members are asked to keep an eye on the notice board for information of the Christmas event.

Ladies B grade will start next week so those eligible please place your names on the entry sheet.

Last week’s pennant results were not the best but all teams earned some points to keep them in the finals hunt.

Saturday pennant teams are as follows:

Division One v Strathmerton (away) - K Johnson, J Peacock, D Polkinghorne, A West (s); T Turner, D Brown, M Lewis, W Blanch (s); P Wilson, D Hutchins, D Retallick, I Smethurst (s); B Birthisell, D Walsh, M Krug, R Brown(s). Bowlers are to leave the club at 12.15pm.

Jerilderie Jerilderie’s second road trip to Numurkah was an enjoyable afternoon of bowls where scores ended in a draw.

Terry Chaplain’s rink played very well to win 27 to 16.

Their rink was drawn on the 19th end, before putting their foot down to get 12 shots to one in the last six ends for the only rink win on the day.

Lucy Gurciullo’s rink had only scored on three ends at half time, but only allowed Numurkah two more ends following the break to go down 27 to 25.

Their fightback was instrumental in the team drawing the day.

Col Bryce’s rink had their first loss for the season, defeated 26 to 17.

Thanks to all the clubs at the halfway mark of the draw, the volunteers are an exceptional community support base that are instrumental in keeping the sport and the clubs surviving.
