December has arrived which means the first chance to officially celebrate the Christmas season is this Friday night, at the Berrigan Night Markets.

Chanter St will be closed to traffic between 5.30pm and 11pm for the event, turning the main street into a festive mall.

To promote that Christmas feeling, carols will be held as the sun starts to set.

About 25 market stalls are confirmed for the evening as a perfect way to find a few gift ideas for Christmas.

A new singing competition will be held at the markets this year — Berrigan’s own version of ‘The Voice’ — plus a pie eating competition as well.

The Night Markets kicks off at 6pm and carols start at 8pm.

The Berrigan Night Markets also serves as one of the biggest fundraisers for the Berrigan Red Cross branch.

The Fashion Extravaganza is a great opportunity to stock up on some modern items and this year marks the 10th year the Berrigan Red Cross has hosted the event.

The Fashion Extravaganza runs from 5pm to 9pm on Friday, and again from 9am to 1pm Saturday at the Momalong Pub on Chanter St.

Entry is a gold coin donation and a raffle will also be run.

Berrigan Red Cross president Marion Dickins said the extravaganza is always an exciting night for the local branch.

‘‘It’s a great opportunity to snag a nice fashion item at heavily reduced prices,’’ she said.

‘‘We really enjoy the the fact people travel many miles to support the Fashion Extravaganza.

‘‘Unfortunately there won’t be any men’s wear this year.

‘‘As this is our 10th year, we’re hosting a special branch morning tea to celebrate.’’

Last year the extravaganza sold close 800 fashion items and raised almost $10,000.

From the money raised, $6400 was donated to the Australian Red Cross Myanmar appeal and $2300 to the Berrigan Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs Dickins said this year the money will be donated to drought assistance.

‘‘We want to raise $8000 to bring our 10 year total to $100,000, which is an outstanding effort.’’

Berrigan Red Cross members Christine Myers, Lyndall Horne and Marion Dickins with some of the items that will be on sale this Friday night.
