Tocumwal hosting awards ceremony
The sunny Tocumwal Foreshore is a great way to start the day this Saturday and celebrate Australia Day.
As part of the two year rotation system for Australia Day awards in the Berrigan Shire, Tocumwal will host Australia Day this year and 2020 before going to Finley for 2021 and 2022.
A free breakfast will be provided before the winners of the Australia Day Awards — including Citizen of the Year — are announced at the old boat ramp and wharf.
Last year’s Citizen of the Year John Hand will be a special guest speaker, and there will also be bush poet Rob Jones and music by Callum Gleeson.
Tocumwal based councillor and Australia Day organising committee member Colin Jones said it will be an exciting morning for the Berrigan Shire.
‘‘We’re inviting all community members of the Berrigan Shire to attend on Saturday.
‘‘With the sunshine, Murray River and gum trees I couldn’t think of something more Australian on Australia Day.
‘‘It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the diversity and community driven citizens.
‘‘Saturday is about celebrating the nation’s history and feeling proud to be an Australian.’’
To pay tribute to the rich farming community in the Berrigan Shire there will be a blade shearing demonstration.
Cr Jones is recommending attendees arrive early to get a good parking spot.
‘‘As it’s a Foreshore Market day it will be quite busy.
‘‘Park on Hennessey St or at the recreation reserve and then make your way along the beautiful bird walk to the foreshore.’’
The community barbecue starts at 8am, with the formal ceremony scheduled for 9am.
