All aboard for big plans
Last week I was invited to a meeting of the Finley Pioneer Railway.
Being a bit of a train lover and a history nut, I attended the meeting and fell in love with the site and its story.
The station has been under the custodianship of Marie and Allan Matheson for the past 20 years. They have maintained the buildings and gardens beautifully during this time.
The group has a vision for the future of the station with lots of projects already steaming along. And, others sitting on the boiler, stoked and waiting to begin.
It is envisaged that within the next few months, Heritage Rail will approve these and with the guidance of the heritage architect they will pull out some pretty amazing sights, sounds and activities.
Keep an eye on the SRN for group activities.
Meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month, making next month’s meeting February 26 from 2pm at the station. New members are always welcome.
A reminder to all members of Finley Garden Lovers’ Club that the first meeting for 2019 will be next Monday, February 4 from 2pm at the Uniting Church Hall.
The first meeting will have a theme: ‘Beat the heat in Finley’.
Members are asked to share ideas that have worked for them.
And also, if we could come up with a list of plants that have not burnt during our spate of forties.
New members very welcome.
February sees the return of Friday afternoon movies for adults at the Finley Library.
The first movie for 2019 is ‘Tea with the Dames’, a unique celebration of the lives and careers of four world famous actresses — Dame Eileen Atkins, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Joan Plowright and Dame Maggie Smith. It will be screened this Friday at 1.30pm. Everyone is welcome and the movies are free.
Any queries feel free to call Ros Rowe, 5888 5182, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The Finley Show Society will hold its annual Poultry Auction on Saturday, March 23 and Sheep Dog Trials on June 6 to 10. The show will be on September 1 and the rose show in November.
To keep up to date with Show Society activities check out their website — www.finleyshowsociety.org — or keep an eye on the SRN.
A reminder to all Finley Probus Club members that meetings for 2019 resume Tuesday, February 5 at 10am at Finley Bowling Club.
Already trips are being planned for this year so come along and join us.
We hope to see you at our next meeting.
Tai Chi classes start again from tomorrow at 9.30am and 11.15am, and on Friday from 9.30 am.
Classes are held at the Finley RS Club and are for one hour.
Tai Chi for health is for men and women and covers arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, energy and two new forms — Tai Chi for memory and Tai Chi for heart.
People from surrounding towns are also welcome.
Phone Veronica on 0413 678 389 for further information.
Looking forward to another year of good health and fun with Tai Chi.
The Hospital Op Shop window looked wonderful and extremely Aussie for the 2019 Australia Day celebrations. Nice work Lesley Wilson. Lesley also had a bit of a competition running to find out if anyone (particularly the children) knew the name of the Swagman in the song Waltzing Matilda.
Up to this point no one has come forth with his name.
I am assured it is there if you sing the song and not read the words; it’s all a matter of articulation.
So as a little side to Lesley’s competition if you know his name, drop me an email.
The Hospital Op Shop is offering a great bargain for these long hot summer days.
Why not grab a book or a bag full of books from the shop for a mere $5 a bag?
By doing this you get a great bargain or two and leave a smaller footprint on the world by recycling.
Don’t forget ‘Bingo at the Bowlo’, next Tuesday, February 5. Eyes down is at 12.45pm.
There will be an afternoon tea break and second round of games and raffle to follow.
Can Assist Finley Branch and Finley Bowling Club invite all members and guests to come along and have a laugh and maybe win some great cash and raffle prizes.
Transport is available by calling the club on Tuesday, before 12pm, and leaving your name, number and address.
Thank you to all who contributed to this week’s ‘From Finley’.
Please feel free to contact me with your news, stories and photographs and remember I am always willing to attend your event.
