Deni down Dees
Jerilderie’s hopes for a Murray Valley Cricket Association Division Two finals appearance took a massive blow, following a 16 run loss to the Deni Rhinos on Saturday.
Jerilderie won the toss at their home ground and sent Deni in to bat.
The Rhinos steadily built their innings, at the end of nine overs having 22 runs on the board without loss, only to lose two quick wickets — Tom McCallum (five) and Dom Read (12) — in Rory Knight’s (2/17 off five) fifth over.
The Rhinos continued to lose wickets, except Rhys Westcott, who put up strong resistance to be Deniliquin’s last batsman out with the score at 108.
Westcott contributed a match-winning score of 63 from his own bat, which included seven boundaries and two ‘sixes’.
Jerilderie’s leading wicket taker was Dylan Henery, taking 3/1 off three overs, with Robert Marshall (2/15 off seven) and Luke Keating (2/34 off six) also bowling well.
Chasing down the seemingly modest score set by the Rhinos, Jerilderie suffered early set-backs when first Justin Lawton (one) and Dylan Henery (one), were quickly sent packing by Brock Ezard (3/17 off seven).
From there, a steady parade of Jerilderie batsmen to the pavilion followed, Jerilderie being all out for 92 in the 25th over.
Only Knight, in a good game with both bat and ball, Demons captain Mitch A’Vard and Adam Boag, reached double figures, as the Rhinos cruised to their fourth win of the season.
The visitors’ best bowlers included Ezard, Andrew Holloway (3/25 off seven) and debutant Paul Pritchard, chipping in for two wickets while giving up only seven runs from his three overs.
Jerilderie will be on the road to Cobram’s Scott Reserve for a must-win game against bottom of the ladder Cobram-Yarroweyah United on Saturday.
