‘So close’ for The General
Nathan Binks was ‘oh so close’ to glory in his return to the Finley Tractor Pull on Saturday night reaching a 98 metre first pull.
The former local was tearing up the Finley Showgrounds straight on his first pull in ‘The General’ but unfortunately fell slightly behind on the second pull, only registering 89.5 metres with his son Cooper at the wheel.
As the weather started to cool his six litre V8 was ready to put in one last almighty effort and managed to reach the 92 metre mark, just eight metres short of a full pull.
Mr Binks said it was his most successful tractor pull across all circuits.
‘‘In 10 years that’s the best I’ve had. And we weren’t the only ones to say that, there were also other veterans there who said the same.
‘‘There were perfect track conditions and the whole set up was fantastic.’’
As Mr Binks was being towed down the side lanes towards the main straight he said old friends were welcoming him back to the town.
‘‘An old fella called Kenny Bevan hung over the fence and said a big hello and I haven’t seen him for 25 years.
‘‘There’s an old guy called John McBurnie who drives some of the towing tractors and he was my neighbour when I lived in Finley.
‘‘John always makes a point of coming over and saying g’day, and I had a really good chat with him over the night so that was special,’’ Mr Binks said.
