Eagles swimmers soar to clean sweep
Eagles have again shown their dominance with a clean sweep of this year’s Tocumwal Public School swimming carnival taking out both the points and handicap shields.
With all three houses fielding a similar number of competitors aged 8-13 years, it was the enthusiastic participation of the Eagles team competing in more events which led to their victory to take home the Rosemary Reed Shield for Participation.
The carnival culminated the two weeks of swim scheme that has seen enormous improvements in the standard of swimming throughout the school.
Students from Years 2 to 6 participated each day in small groups undertaking stroke development and building fitness.
Principal of TPS Darren White said the number of students who now compete in the 50m was a testament to the swim scheme.
‘‘Students are gaining confidence and skills which is very important for their fitness as well as their safety,’’ he said.
‘‘It was very exciting to see some students competing in their first races after overcoming their fear of the water.
‘‘Thank you to Mrs Hatty, with assistance from Mr Haley, for the organisation of the carnival and for the teachers who assisted in making it such an enjoyable day.’’
Many individual swimmers shone throughout the day with some age groups closely contested.
The 2019 champions were as follows:
Junior Boy - Alex Booth, runnerup Heath Mansell; Junior Girls Molly-Mae Ruigrok, r/u Adrienne Jones; 11 Years Boy - Logan White, r/u Cody Palmer; 11 Years Girl - Abigail Walsh, r/u Amalie Pate; Senior Boy - Charlie Locke, r/u Will O’Connell; Senior Girls - Remmi Wardlaw, r/u Tully Jones and Katya Eddy.
A number of records were broken on the day including four by Logan White, Heath Mansell broke one and equalled one, while Liam Sutton, Rory Shepherd, Lilly Clarke and Taylor Waldron all broke one each.
‘‘On Friday, 25 students will compete at the Finley Zone Swimming Carnival looking to qualify for the Regional Carnival later this term. We wish them all the best of luck,’’ Mr White said.
