Ber­ri­gan’s on the board

Ber­ri­gan A grade are on the board in 2019 with an im­pres­sive five goal up­set win over last year’s pre­lim­i­nary fi­nal­ist Waaia in round two of the Pi­cola & Dis­trict League on Satur­day.

The Saints came out fir­ing against the Bombers with a point to prove af­ter los­ing last week.

Ber­ri­gan’s shoot­ers worked well to­gether, shoot­ing beau­ti­fully and de­fend­ers pres­sure was fan­tas­tic, re­ally mak­ing Waaia work for their goals.

Mid­court play­ers moved the ball ef­fec­tively with strong pos­ses­sions and get­ting some re­ally good hands to balls. Fi­nal score, Ber­ri­gan 38 to Waaia 33. Awards: Thomson’s Ser­vice Cen­tre - Emma-Jane Schif­ferle; Win­gates - Daneka Robin­son.

Ber­ri­gan’s B grade were handed a one goal loss in warm con­di­tions against Waaia.

The Saints gave the vis­i­tors a nine goal head start at first break and were still look­ing for some answers at half time re­duc­ing the mar­gin by one to be eight goals down for the main break.

Some cru­cial changes by Nat Fer­gu­son got the Saints fir­ing, the de­fen­sive end kicked into gear as did the shoot­ers.

The Saints held the Bombers in goal for goal ex­changes in the dy­ing min­utes, but un­for­tu­nately the dam­age was done, with Waaia get­ting a late goal to se­cure the win. Fi­nal score, Waaia 34 to Ber­ri­gan 33. Awards: Sab­rina Finch and Dana Karakai.

C grade had an­other im­pres­sive win this week against Waaia.

The game was very quick to take off in the Saints favour with cru­cial turnovers made early in the first quar­ter.

De­fen­sive pres­sure was im­mense the en­tire game and both shoot­ers worked hard for each goal and re­bound. . Fi­nal score, Ber­ri­gan 54 to Waaia 42. Awards: Ren­nick Fam­ily - Judy Karakai; IGA - Rachael Arnold.

Ber­ri­gan’s C reserve brought home their first win of the sea­son.

All play­ers worked hard, with amaz­ing de­fen­sive pres­sure caus­ing vi­tal turnovers in the mid­court which were cap­i­talised on.

De­fence grabbed ev­ery re­bound they could and worked to bring the ball back to the shoot­ers. Im­pres­sive devel­op­ment from last week from each and ev­ery player. Fi­nal score, Ber­ri­gan 28 to Waaia 25. Awards: Ren­nick Fam­ily - Sam Henderson; Blue Door Award - Chantelle Henderson.

The Un­der 15s Saints are im­prov­ing each week but couldn’t get the win on Satur­day. Fi­nal score, Waaia 25 def Ber­ri­gan 20. Awards: Shae Fen­nel, Jas­mine Lus­combe and Chloe McQual­ter.

Noth­ing could split the U13s Saints and Bombers, with scores level at the fi­nal whis­tle.

A fan­tas­tic game from the Saints’ de­fence through to cen­tre court along with clever pass­ing into the ring, a credit to the whole team.

Com­ing from be­hind through­out the whole game Ber­ri­gan were im­pres­sive to come away with a draw. Fi­nal score, Ber­ri­gan 22 to Waaia 22. Awards: Lacey Turner, Jess O’Dwyer and Layla Towler.

Ber­ri­gan’s U11s also man­aged to record a win. Fi­nal score, Ber­ri­gan 8 to Waaia 2. Awards: Miley Driscoll, Gra­cie Rice, Grace Cameron and Mad­die Rice.
